Occlusion, Malocclusion and Jaw Dysfunction - An Overview for Dentists

Patients may report signs and symptoms of jaw dysfunction before, during, and after any dental treatment. Because of the time-based association between symptoms and dental treatment, static and dynamic occlusal anomalies have been frequently considered as risk factors for jaw dysfunction. Nonetheless, the impact of dental occlusion on oral health remains controversial. As a result, clinical decision-making mostly relies on anecdotal findings, clinical experience, personal preference and belief.

What is a good occlusion? What is the relationship between malocclusion and jaw dysfunction? Is there any long term benefit from having a good occlusion on oral health? How should we manage jaw dysfunction?

This course will review the relationship between malocclusion and jaw dysfunction and their management with the following learning objectives:

1. Understand key principles of static and functional occlusion, condylar position, and their relationship with oral health, jaw function and dysfunction.
2. Be able to diagnose jaw parafunction and sleep bruxism, and to identify the multifactorial aspects involved in the pathophysiology of tooth wear.
3. Understand the principles for the design, fabrication, and adjustment of occlusal splints.
4. Identify red flags for the occlusal discomfort syndrome and have the ability to manage this condition.
5. To perform a jaw functional examination, including the assessment of occlusal contacts, bite registration, auscultation of the temporomandibular joints and palpation of the masticatory muscles.
6. Make a differential diagnosis between disorders of the temporomandibular joints and of the masticatory muscles.
7. Understand the principles of cognitive behavioral treatment, self-education, and home-based exercises for the management of jaw dysfunction.

About our Speaker:  Professor Mauro Farella

Mauro Farella is Professor and Chair of Orthodontics, Director of the Postgraduate Programme in Orthodontics (Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry) and Deputy Associate Dean for Research  at the University of Otago, New Zealand. He holds a DDS Degree (University of Naples), a Specialist Degree in Orthodontics (University of Naples), a PhD in Oral Sciences (University of Reggio Calabria), a Specialist Degree in Medical Statistics (University of Milan), and the "Venia Legendi" in Switzerland (University of Zürich). He has also been awarded Certified Membership of the European Board of Orthodontists (Helsinki, Finland).

His current research interests include craniofacial research, jaw function, and clinical  orthodontics. In addition, Mauro Farella is a widely recognized expert in orofacial muscles, bruxism, and temporomandibular joint research. Mauro Farella has published numerous (>130) original articles in peer-reviewed international journals.  He is Associate Editor of the Journal “Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research” and on the Editorial Board of the "Journal of Oral Rehabilitation". He has lectured around the world and is an active member of many associations. He is the recipient of several national and international research prizes, such as the Alan Docking Award from the International Association for Dental Research, and the Sir John Walsh Award, to acknowledge the excellence achieved in dental research.
