April 2025 Branch Meeting - Dr James Olsen - An update on the Auckland public OMS unit and the contemporary management of common acute presentations.

The Auckland regional public OMS unit services the entire Auckland and Northland regions and serves as an accredited training centre through the RACDS.  It offers patients the full scope of the specialty and manages a high caseload, both acutely and electively.  The management of odontogenic infections and mandibular fractures make up the major portion of its acute workload and our speaker will expand on both these topics in further detail.

Dr Olsen will also:

• familiarise you with the current staffing and structure of the public OMS unit.
• clarify what services are being offered.
• remind you how to refer patients into the service, both acutely and electively.
• identify the key principles in the management of odontogenic infections.
• provide a brief overview of the management of mandibular fractures in 2025

About our speaker:

Dr James Olsen is a consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, working both publicly and privately in Auckland.  He is the supervisor of training for the Auckland centre and also sits on the ANZAOMS Australasian council as nextgen director.
