May 2025 Branch Meeting - Dr Ed Young - Optimal Adhesive Dentistry with Direct and Indirect Composite Resins

This presentation aims to provide an in-depth review of techniques and materials that support optimal outcomes in adhesive dentistry, focusing on both direct and indirect composite resin restorations.
In today’s increasingly cost-conscious environment, many patients are prioritising the preservation of their natural dentition for as long as possible. As clinicians, one of our most significant challenges is managing and preventing restorative failures, ranging from minor complications to more extensive setbacks
This session will cover a range of evidence-based strategies and materials designed to strengthen the bond between restorative materials and tooth structure. Particular attention will be given to surface treatment protocols for both the tooth and restorative substrates, which are critical to long-term success. By understanding and applying these principles, clinicians can improve outcomes, enhance restoration longevity, and provide patients with durable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing solutions.
Additionally, the presentation will touch on the importance of patient-driven maintenance techniques, which are often underestimated but vital to the success and lifespan of restorations.
By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate confidence in using current bonding techniques for optimal adhesion to tooth structure.
- Understand the importance of correct surface treatment of both natural tooth structure and indirect materials for reliable bonding.
- Identify cases where compromised teeth can be preserved with adhesive techniques, both in the short and long term.
- Appreciate the role of patient compliance and maintenance in the longevity of restorations.
Learning Outcomes:
- Be confident in techniques that will give us the best bonding to tooth structure.
- Understand why the treatment to surfaces of tooth and indirect materials is critical for good bonding.
- Recognize that some teeth can be saved for short and long-term purposes.
- Techniques to maintain restorations by patients maybe the key to success.
